AMA RULES
Hillclimb Rules
AMA-sanctioned events operate according to the rules established by the AMA Congress, the rule-making body of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA).
1. General Hillclimb Rules
The AMA Amateur Competition Rulebook (available below) is exclusively for AMA-chartered clubs and promoters hosting AMA-sanctioned events. This rulebook applies to all AMA-sanctioned competitions, and any supplemental regulations specific to a series must be approved by the AMA. Hillclimb rules are fully detailed in this rulebook.
2. Eligibility Requirements for Amateur Hillclimb Riders
- Minimum Age: Riders must be at least 12 years old to compete on any motorcycle with a displacement of up to 250cc.
- For Motorcycles Over 250cc: Riders must be 14 years or older.
- Age Determination: The rider’s age is determined on the event date, except for youth competitions.
3. Provisional AMA Pro Racing Hillclimb License
This license allows current amateur hillclimb competitors to maintain their amateur status while participating in a limited number of pro races.
- Participation Limit: Competitors may participate in up to, but not more than, one race less than 50% of AMA Pro Hillclimb events to retain amateur status. Competing in 50% or more events upgrades the license to professional status, ending amateur eligibility.
- Qualifications for Provisional License:
- Riders must have placed in the top 30% of the 450cc, 600cc, or 750cc open classes during the last two seasons of the AMA Amateur Hillclimb Grand Championship.
- Riders must be 16 years or older to apply for the provisional license.
- Compliance: Riders must adhere to the AMA Pro Hillclimb Rulebook.
4. 2021 AMA Racing Rulebook Update
The following rule change was approved by the AMA Board of Directors and went into effect on January 1, 2021. Updates affecting all amateur AMA racing disciplines are highlighted in bold italic.
The helmet’s primary purpose is protection; thus, attachments like cameras or accessories are prohibited.
Helmet Modification Restriction:
All helmets must remain intact, with no modifications allowed to alter their original tested and approved structure.
